About S-cube

S-cube is a brand name of tri-axis magnetic sensing concept presented by Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM). 

AKM provides "Magnetic Sensing Solution" that predicts user application needs with its unique IC circuit architecture and information processing algorithm which obtains information hidden in the signal of magnetic sensors.

Innovating Sensors since 2003

Asahi Kasei Corporation is a company providing from houses and household products to cutting-edge electronic devices in various fields.

S-cube was established in March 2003 at the Electronic Components Research Laboratory, which aims to develop new value-added electronic components that can only be produced by Asahi Kasei.

With the rapid development of advanced technologies such as SNS, AI, AR/VR, robotics, in addition to IT, the world has entered the super computerization era. Recently, there is an overflow of information equipment such as computers and smartphones around us. Autonomous driving technology has progressed, and various sensors have been installed in this technology. Software that accurately processes sensor signal information on computers is becoming increasingly important to unveil things hidden in the sensor signal and provide them as information which is needed for life. 

AKM is working to develop "sensor solutions" that comprehensively provide signal processing hardware (architecture) and information processing software (algorithms) with optimally interface of sensors and computers, which is not just the development of conventional sensor devices.

New sensor era has come

Sensors have been required to serve as transducers that convert primarily physical and chemical quantities into electrical signals. Therefore, a higher conversion efficiency (=sensitivity) sensor was considered as a better sensor. Typical examples include temperature sensors, humidity sensors, pressure sensors, and optical sensors. Acceleration sensors and magnetic sensors that detect gravity and vibration are also well known.

Information devices such as smartphones are required to have the capability to provide flexible services by taking up human intentions more than ever before. With the spread of IoT products that can transmit and acquire data information from anytime and anywhere, we have been in the world where a large number of sensors are active throughout the world. We believe that an unprecedented new sensor will be needed, just like a trillion sensor society. 

Instead of simply converting physical and chemical quantities into electrical signals, the sensor signals are used to derive those useful for human life, and are then converted into information that can be used well by the user. We want to realize these new concepts via S-cube.

What is the purpose of the sensor?

What is the most demanding performance of the sensor now?

Higher sensitivity?  Wide dynamic range?  Do you want to reduce the size and power consumption?

All of these are important performances, but the value of the sensor is not determined only by the numerical performances written on these specification sheets. The environment you want to measure and the information you want, that is, the user's two dimensions required for the sensor, will vary greatly depending on the application. The optimal sensor is different depending on the purpose of measurement.

Therefore, AKM began by moving away from the traditional development process, such as developing a sensor with good numerical performance and then finding a market where it can be used. Rather than using the performance of the sensor itself as a starting point for the idea, we begin by assuming an application and considering the environmental conditions we want to measure, and devising an algorithm to extract the desired information from it.

Our policy is to design the optimal architecture for signal processing as an IC circuit, and then select the optimal sensor. AKM provides a go-one-step-ahead sensing solution that anticipates and develops the technologies required by user applications, with a focus on "what is the purpose of measurement with sensors" rather than "improving the performance of sensors."
